Storage firm Sandisk has unveiled two lines of high-performance solid-state disk (SSD) drives, one aimed at the general market while the second targets system vendors, especially those building ultra-thin laptops.
Available immediately, the SanDisk Extreme SSD range is designed as a drop-in replacement for a 2.5in hard drive but offers up to 10 times the performance, while the X100 SSD range comes in a number of formats including cased drives or mini-Sata modules to fit into new systems.
The Extreme SSD is currently available in capacities of 120GB and 240GB for £122 and £239 respectively, while a 480GB version is expected later this year.
Sandisk said the drives can boot a PC in less than 16 seconds, and can also improve application performance with their sequential read capability of up to 550MB/s.
Each Extreme SSD also consumes 30 per cent less power than a hard disk drive while generating less heat and noise.
For system builders, the SanDisk X100 SSD is available in capacities of 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 512GB, and sports a 6Gbit/s Sata host interface.
These drives are available in a number of form factors, including a standard 2.5in drive, mini-Sata and customised thin form factors for ultra-thin laptops.
According to Sandisk, the X100 models achieve long-term reliability through robust, continual background error checking and advanced data recovery mechanisms.
They also boast similar performance to the Extreme SSD models, with sequential read speeds up to 500MB/s.
"From the smallest BGA form factors of the iSSD to the economical lower power U100, all the way up to the high performance and high capacity points of our new X100, SanDisk [can] meet the needs of notebook, desktop and ultra-thin laptop manufacturers," said Sandisk vice president of client storage solutions, Kevin Conley.
The X100 SSD range is available now for both sampling to PC vendors and production-volume shipments.
