Amulet Hotkey has introduced its first PC-over-IP (PCoIP) workstation blade optimised for CAD/CAM, which enables engineers and graphics professionals to access applications over the internet while their workstation with its applications and data stays securely in the corporate datacentre.
The DXM610X workstation blade builds on the PCoIP multi-monitor blade architecture which Amulet first introduced in 2009, but is the first model capable of providing the compute and graphics performance required for 3D design and CAD/CAM software, the firm said.
The advantage of this remote access model is that data remains securely locked in the datacentre, according to Amulet. Plus, CAD and other datasets required by graphics professionals may be extremely large in size, posing difficulties in moving them from around.
The DXM610X is actually based on a Dell PowerEdge M610x server blade, but Amulet has adapted it by adding a workstation Bios firmware, Nvidia Quadro 4000 graphics adapter, and a hardware accelerator card to drive the PCoIP remote screen protocol.
In the case of the DXM610X, the end user connects with one of Amulet's PCoIP zero client endpoint devices, which can support multiple monitors at resolutions up to 1920 x 1200.
Like the Dell server blade it is based on, the DXM610X is a twin-socket system that can be configured with quad-core or six-core Intel Xeon processors and up to 192GB of memory, and slots into Dell's M1000e blade enclosures.
Amulet is accepting sales enquiries for the DXM610X, but it is not expected to ship until March. Pricing has also yet to be fixed.
The firm also supplies keyboard/video/mouse (KVM) switch kit and remote desktop solutions for applications such as stock market trading floors.
