ORLANDO: The rollout of 4G networks will lead to significant advancements in the capabilities of social media platforms to share richer, high-quality content, according to IBM.
Speaking at the firm's Lotusphere event, IBM social business and collaboration director for Europe Uffe Sorensen, said the ability of these networks to carry more data would lead to clear improvements in the content being shared.
"The increased bandwidth is going to give you richer content – it is not going to change the adoption of blogging or sharing capabilities – it is just going to make it better," he said.
He noted that increased bandwidth would have the biggest impact on the use of video content.
"People are talking more about integrating video into what they do, to make it part of their day-to-day experience, primarily to save on travel costs," he said.
The UK is not expected to have 4G networks until 2014, but Sorensen did have some good news for the region, noting that UK firms are at the forefront when it comes to new social tools.
"The UK is on the leading edge in western Europe. It is driving the adoption of social technologies, alongside Germany," he said.
Sorensen admitted, though, that while the use of such tools is on the rise among businesses, often taking advantage of platforms from firms like IBM, it is still consumer services like Twitter that will lead the development of these tools.
"Due to the amount of people in the consumer space and what they do day in, day out, the inventions are going to happen there, but then you can think about whether they have business value and should they be adopted, or left alone," he added.
