Demand for LTE services will see 430 million subscribers using 4G services by 2016 as businesses embrace the benefits superfast mobile broadband access can provide staff, according to a report by Juniper Research.
However, Juniper said that despite this demand, the total subscriber base for LTE services would only represent six per cent of mobile broadband users by 2016 as technologies such as HSPA remain standard.
Report author Nitin Bhas told V3 the main growth for 4G services would come first from enterprises keen to improve their staff's productivity, especially as the technology is embedded in mobile devices.
"LTE will be dominated in the early years by enterprise or business subscribers attracted by the improved data speeds and the QoS (Quality of Service) guarantees we expect to be offered," he said. "LTE smartphones and tablets are expected to achieve early market traction in the enterprise market, with high-end data users migrating to the faster technology."
Bhas said the growth of embedded 4G technology, rather than that accessed via a dongle in a laptop, would also drive consumer demand which would account for half the number of subscribers by 2016.
"North America, along with western Europe, will be the most advanced region globally for enterprise users accessing LTE mobile broadband," he added.
The government has urged operators to put these concerns to one side for the greater good of the nation. It has been estimated the delays could be costing the UK as much as £732m a year in lost revenue.
UK mobile operators are using the technology, though, with both Everything Everywhere and O2 testing the use of 4G services in Cornwall and London respectively, to help plan their future network deployments.
