Networking hardware firm Ruckus Wireless has unveiled a tool which will allow its access points to automatically select Wi-Fi channels based on traffic and reliability.
The company said the ChannelFly tool will allow its hardware to automatically avoid traffic and coverage errors resulting from interference on other channels. Devices will be able to to quickly scan channels on the Wi-Fi spectrum and select those best-suited to handle traffic.
In addition to commonly-used channels, the devices are able to check the full spectrum of channels to select those with the best potential capacity.
David Stiff, Ruckus Wireless product line manager, told V3 that the ChannelFly tool uses elements of the company's BeamFlex system to assess each channel for stability and interference.
"We have got a very unique way of assessing the live channel capacity to figure what its potential throughput is or predict its channel capacity," Stiff said.
"We can make an assessment of how good the channel can be without having to load the channel."
Stiff said that while early test cases have included hotels and service providers, the platform will be useful for any business or organisation looking to operate a wireless network deployment over an extended area.
"It can be the difference between wireless working and not working," he said.
"We are solving problems that are just at the fundamental layer of wireless, making sure the access points are staying connected with the clients under a variety of challenging situations."
Ruckus said it will be offering the ChannelFly technology as a free component in its ZoneFlex 9.3 software update.
