SAN FRANCISCO: Facebook has revealed that it runs 70 per cent of its business on cloud computing technology, including many of its financial applications.
The social networking giant's chief information officer, Tim Campos, attended the Salesforce annual customer event, Dreamforce, on Thursday to discuss his firm's use of the cloud platform.
"We have fully adopted the cloud across our ecosystem," said Campos.
"Around 70 per cent of our back-office infrastructure runs on software-as-a-service technology, with the majority running on the Force.com platform.
"We have chosen Force.com as we need speed. Our company needs to be agile and fast and we need tools to make us even faster."
Campos said Facebook deploys technology quickly, such as its datacentre inventory product, which took only five months to go live.
Salesforce made a number of updates to its Force.com platform at the conference, including updates to its business collaboration tool Chatter, and ISV partnerships with popular enterprise resource planning (ERP) firms that have resulted in an array of native social ERP applications.
According to slides shown by Campos, Facebook still uses a number of on-premise ERP applications and business intelligence applications. Campos did not say when these would be moved over to the cloud.
Facebook has previously been reported to be using Oracle databases as part of its on-premise infrastructure. While Campos said Facebook was using Salesforce's new Database.com technology, he did not say whether this affected Facebook's Oracle partnership.
Salesforce and Facebook have been partners for a number of years, and last March revealed deeper integration in Service Cloud 3. At the Dreamforce event, Salesforce launched Social Customer Profiles, which will allow companies using Chatter to track customers on a mix of social networks, including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
