Google has unveiled a series of new Gmail interfaces that could offer improved productivity and streamlined use for organisations.
The changes will allow users to select from six different layout styles, covering the classic layout most widely used, the Priority Inbox system launched last year, and an Important First style to keep all important read and unread mail grouped together.
There is also an Unread option that leaves all unread mail at the top and everything else below, and a Starred option to leave emails marked as important at the top and everything else below.
Google software engineer Andrew Moedinger said in a blog post that the ability to pick a favourite display method will help users set up their inbox in the way that best suits them.
"Over the coming weeks, we're rolling out several new inbox styles to help you manage your mail in the way that works best for you. Once it's turned on for your account, you can easily choose a style from the tabs at the top of your inbox," he said.
Adding yet more options to customise the tool for new and existing users underlines Google's desire to offer a compelling alternative to on-premise email systems from Microsoft and IBM.
The changes to the layout of emails comes as Google plans to overhaul the entire Gmail interface, announcing on 1 July that it will add two new options that can be selected by users.
These themes, dubbed 'Preview' and 'Preview Dense', offer a sneak peek at how the company plans to change the Gmail interface in the future to dynamically accommodate different screen sizes and user preferences.
