Major internet firms including Google and Facebook are preparing to offer access to their sites over IPv6 on Wednesday as part of World IPv6 Day, an event designed to increase awareness of the need for businesses to switch from the IPv4 protocol.
The move to IPv6 has been steadily increasing in importance on the networking agenda, with government-backed initiatives and warnings from RIPE NCC, which distributes blocks of IPv4 addresses, that the pool of such addresses is diminishing.
Numerous internet and networking firms have welcomed World IPv6 Day for raising awareness around the transition and the business benefits it will provide.
Simon McCalla, director of IT at .uk registry Nominet, told V3.co.uk that IPv6 Day offers key benefits including allowing large internet sites to share any problems in migrating to the protocol.
"With World IPv6 Day and firms like Google and Facebook getting involved we can really help drive awareness of the need to start preparing for IPv6 and the next stage of the internet," he said.
"Furthermore, by testing IPv6 connections on a global scale on a single day, those invovled can share any issues they see during the day to make other sites aware of the problems they encountered."
McCalla added that the companies are working together on a single day, rather than over longer periods, to remove issues of competitive advantage and to share information.
He also noted that, while raising awareness of the need to move away from IPv4 is an important part of driving adoption of IPv6, the benefits of the protocol to businesses and consumers will increase its take up.
"A lot of demand for IPv6 may be driven by the increased use of connected devices and appliances in the home that consumers will start to ask for from companies, so there are commercial reasons for looking to adopt IPv6 networks too," he added.
