Micron has launched a range of PCI Express solid state drive (SSD) cards which the company says offers a dramatically better price/performance ratio than anything else on the market.
The RealSSD P320h line are full height, half length PCIe cards running 350GB and 700GB of 34nm single-level cell NAND memory. The cards are capable of 3GB/s read and 2GB/s write speeds for sequential data, and use DDR3 DRAM.
Janene Ellefson, product marketing manager for Micron's PCIe marketing line, told V3.co.uk that the cards set a new standard for price/performance in the industry, costing around $16 per gigabyte compared to the current standard of around $25.
"Micron can drive adoptions, since PCIe is a new and upcoming market," she said. "There are a lot of people excited about PCIe SSD technology, about being able to put high performance solutions out there. As the dollar per gigabyte drops these things become more adoptable."
Micron has an advantage over other manufacturers because the company makes the cards entirely out of NAND, DRAM and its own application-specific integrated circuit. Specialised Microsoft and Linux drivers are also available to optimise performance, Ellefson said.
To ensure data security, Micron's proprietary NAND redundant array of independent nodes management technology imitates the RAID technology used with traditional platter storage systems.
The use of PCIe with SSD is one of the fastest growing sectors in the storage industry, according to Jeff Janukowicz, research manager in IDC's storage group. The total SSD market was worth around $850m in 2010, but PCIe showed 300 per cent annual growth.
"It's an excellent move, and positions Micron very well in a high-growth market," Janukowicz told V3.co.uk. "Customers will also be reassured by the fact that Micron has control of the entire build of materials."
