Global consultancy Deloitte has launched a crisis management smartphone application designed to ensure that staff always have access to key information during an emergency.
The Bamboo tool stores contact and disaster planning information on the smartphone so that staff can still access documents on how to proceed in the event of an incident even if there is no internet connection.
Bamboo can push information on the network data layer to mobile devices so that they have the latest contact information for HR and business management systems.
Philip Alcock, head of business resilience at Deloitte in the UK, told V3.co.uk that operating on the network data layer allows the application to provide communication capabilities in tough locations.
"Bamboo is well suited for use in small-scale localised events that affect perhaps one small team or even a single individual, to global widespread events like the ash cloud where staff need key information, including contact details, " he said.
"Information is recorded and saved so that firms can carry out post-event auditing for training or legal purposes, and staff don't need in-depth training on how to use the application because it's all done using touch-screen interaction on smartphones."
Alcock said that Deloitte has customers using the tool, and that there has been interest in several sectors including financial services, media and utilities.
The release again highlights the growing number of business applications making their way onto the major smartphone platforms.
Bamboo is available for BlackBerry, iPhone, iPad and Android devices, with Windows Phone 7 to follow. Deloitte has issued the application to its 100,000 strong workforce.
The application is available direct from Deloitte given the security credentials required to use the service, and customers are charged an annual licence fee for each handset and a command module fee.
