Tandberg Data has introduced a network-attached disk library aimed at providing backup protection for SMEs.
The RDX QuikStation is a removable disk library, combining the benefits of tape storage with the speed, reliability and high capacity of disk drives, according to the firm.
Available now through Tandberg Data reseller channel partners, the RDX QuikStation is based on RDX (Removable Disk Technology), which uses disk cartridges holding up to 1TB of data.
RDX is a disk standard developed for archiving, with an expected lifetime of 30 years or more, and is used by vendors such as Dell and HP.
The QuikStation has eight RDX docks in its 2U rack-mount enclosure, and can provide up to 8TB of online data capacity at any given moment, but the cartridges can also be removed and stored for safe keeping, as with tape.
The disk library connects to the network via two Gigabit Ethernet ports, and can be configured as eight separate iSCSI targets or to emulate a Tandberg tape storage device.
Based as it is on disk technology, the QuikStation can achieve higher performance when performing backup and restore operations, according to Tandberg. It also has a built-in web-based console for management.
The device is supported by commonly used backup tools, such as Computer Associates' ARCserve, Symantec Backup Exec, and Tandberg's own AccuGuard Server backup and de-duplication software.
"The RDX QuikStation is the Swiss Army knife of data protection. With its ruggedised and standardised RDX format, it also creates the ideal foundation for cloud seeding, bulk load and bulk restore," said Tandberg Data marketing vice president Marije Gould.
The RDX QuikStation costs €2,999 (£2,590), and includes a one-year on-site service warranty. RDX media is sold separately.
