Logging on to the Internet will not keep you away from your favourite soaps.
Households with Internet access do watch less television than those that don't go online, according to a survey by Nielsen Media Research - but they were apparently very selective TV watchers before they got wired.
Nielsen tracked three groups of consumers - those without Internet access, those who had just got connected to the Internet and those who had been on it for some time.
Those who never had Net access watched the most television, with their sets on nearly one-third of the day. This means that the other two groups began as ?light? TV watchers before the Internet arrived in their homes, maintains the survey.
Nielsen, however, said more research was necessary before any casual conclusions could be drawn on TV versus Internet in the home.
?Further study will be necessary to determine if our findings relating to Internet access remain constant over time and as Internet penetration becomes more widespread,? commented Ed DeNicola, marketing representative for Nielsen.
The researchers concluded that most households connected to the Internet are in the upper demographic range - higher age and income brackets. They generally watch less television than lower income and younger age groups anyway.
