Larry Ellison, Oracle's chairman and chief executive, admitted this week that the company had "screwed it up" with the Big Five systems integrators in the enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications space.
But he vowed not to repeat the same mistakes in the customer relation management (CRM) package market.
"One of the mistakes we made when competing with SAP was competing against the Big Five, which recommended accounting systems to their customers as a result. But in the CRM space, we're going to slow down our consulting organisation and work with the Big Five and we'll blend our consultants with theirs," Ellison said.
He continued: "This will make us the best partner they've ever had and the aim is to get more people recommending our technology. This is hugely important. We screwed it up with ERP and that cost us hugely. But we're reformed sinners now and we're religious about this."
Ellison also claimed that Oracle was the only applications supplier that could offer users a full suite of CRM applications.
"We are the first and only one with the whole CRM story. Siebel has no marketing, no Web store, no Internet support and no services and is only good in the narrow space of sales force automation (SFA). Head to head we always beat it because it's got moreorless no field service and mobile SFA is not enough," he attested.
He continued: "We're growing much faster than Siebel is and we think we're going to pass it in CRM in a couple of quarters. And while our integration with our ERP applications is not as tight as we would like, we're getting there with each new release."
