SGI has released the source code of its 64-bit XFS file system, to plug a gap in Linux. XFS is a journalled file system, which means it tracks all disk reads and writes so it can recover quickly after a system crash. The move brings the Linux feature set closer to that offered by Windows NT, and marks SGI's commitment to Linux as its fourth officially supported OS.
