DWL provides integration middleware which helps companies provide a single view of prospect and customer information spread across multiple product and business silos.
The purchase is designed to augment IBM's Information Management division, which has completed nine acquisitions in the past four years, and gain access to DWL's customers, including Honeywell and Staples.
DWL's fifth-generation CDI software is based around Java and forms a central component to customer relationship management software that tracks orders and relays their status to vendors.
"The ability to cut through complexity and provide an accurate view of the customer is one of the most important aspects of information management today," said Janet Perna, general manager for information management at IBM.
"We are providing an integrated middleware infrastructure that manages information and aligns that information in real time with business processes."
Helena Schwenk, senior analyst at Ovum, said: "This doesn't surprise me. IBM had been making noises in this direction for a while and it was clear that it needed to do something in the light of growing activity in this area from SAP and Oracle.
"This is yet another sensible acquisition for IBM's Information Management group."
Gartner analyst John Radcliffe added: "DWL has some key technology and had been working closely with IBM. It's all about IBM being able to build a hub for customers that sits in the middle of all their customer data. It's more than just CRM."
According to the 2005 Forrester Wave for CDI, an independent research report that ranked the CDI hub vendors, DWL maintains a grip on high-end financial services companies with a "tech heavenly J2EE architecture and proven extensibility that resulted in the highest overall score".
It also stated that DWL helped to define the CDI market in 2000 and remains a leading player due to its extensible J2EE architecture.
DWL is already a long-term strategic partner of IBM's. The acquisition is expected to be finalised by the end of the year.
The deal is the fourth information management related acquisition since the middle of last year, the other three being Ascential (April 2005) for its data integration software, SRD (January 2005) an identity resolution software provider, and Alphablox (July 2004) for its analytical application development toolset.
