Ameritech is the first of the US' Baby Bell regional telecomms operators to apply for a long distance licence, under the terms of last February's Federal Telecommunications Act. Many other regional operators are preparing to apply. Ameritech will initially look to offer long distance and international services to customers in its home territory, which consists of the mid-West states of Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. It is also pursuing connection agreements that will enable it to offer services to other states. It hopes to achieve interconnection with all US states except Alaska and Hawaii and with 270 countries.
