The IT skills shortage is getting worse, according to a report by the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The report shows that while a record 84% of service sector companies and 73% of manufacturers are recruiting in all sectors, many are having difficulty finding suitable candidates, especially managers, with their IT departments hit particularly hard.
According to the report IT staff are also frequently changing jobs. "One in five information professionals is expected to change jobs this year.
In the Thames Valley, compuer network managers are staying in posts for only three months on average. One company has had 10 network managers in the last 14 months."
Commenting on the findings, Simon Sperryn, chief executive of the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said: "The skills shortages in computing throughout industry are especially worrying. Several factors have caused them. The economic upturn and the rapid expansion of the telecommunications industry has created more demand for IT skills. Preparations for the single currency and efforts to defuse the millennium computer time bomb have made the situation more acute. We simply do not have enough experienced people to take up the types of jobs on offer."
He also said the mismatch between the skills needed and those provided is a problem for several sectors of industry.
"We are encouraged that some firms have overcome the problem by re-employing older workers," said Sperryn. However, he added: "We must Salso find a way of providing those entering the job market and people Swithout work with the skills that employers are demanding."
