Microsoft has turned its attentions on the PC games market, aiming to go far higher than its current fifth place in the sales league. It has eight games ready for the Christmas market.
Showing its seriousness about this market, Microsoft has drawn up new alliances with games publishers Monolith Productions., Strategic Studies Group. and UK-based Rebellion Development, which will create new games for the vendor. Microsoft has also recruited Alexey Pajitnov, creator of the 40 million selling game Tetris. He takes the position of games group general manager.
'Our market policy is to create hits,' said Alecia Bridgewater, Microsoft's games marketing manager. 'It only takes two or three hits to establish a company as market leader.'
Pajitnov is in charge of the development of puzzle and mind-teaser games, designed to capture the imagination of the female market. Pajitnov said: 'Most of the action games, you play it and you throw it away. Puzzle games people play for a longer time.' Already available in the shops and on free trial through the Microsoft Web site (http://www.microsoft.com/games/) are Monster Truck Madness, NBA Full Court Press ( a competitive basketball game), Hellbender, a science-fiction adventure for the dedicated games player and Deadly Tide, from the same designers as Robocop.
All games can be played interactively through modem, Lan and now the Internet (http://www.zone.com/). The games use ActiveX technology and are formatted for Windows 95, requiring Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0.
Four more titles are poised to roll off the production lines in November - Micosoft Flight Simulator, Microsoft Golf 3.0, Microsoft Soccer and GEX.
