Canadian software tools company Speedware aims to boost its executive information systems business by acquiring Software AG's Esperant division.
Esperant's eponymous product is an end user SQL access and reporting tool designed for non-technical business users querying corporate databases. Speedware will integrate it with its own Media product, an Olap (online analytical processing)tool that it acquired with Info Innov of Quebec City two years ago.
Software AG will continue to distribute Esperant worldwide. Speedware will take on 21 development and marketing personnel through the takeover, who will continue to be based in their New Haven, Connecticut offices.
Esperant will improve Media's SQL technology and will link it to other SQL-compliant applications. Conversely, Media will give Esperant Olap capabilities for detailed analysis of multi-dimensional data. "The one criticism previously levelled at Esperant was its lack of Olap capability," said marketing manager Sue Lingard.
"The addition of Esperant to our product line will be critical in sustaining and fuelling our growth in the business intelligence market. Sales of Media grew 150 per cent between 1994 and 1995 and 200 per cent from 1995 to 1996," said Speedware president Karen Heater.
Esperant uses a natural language interface, showing queries in English, and automatically sifts out illogical or distorted queries. It will also integrate with Speedware's Easy Reporter midrange product, which extracts text reports from corporate databases, and with its Media Web Olap tool for the Internet.
