Lucent claims to have reinvented the firewall with the release of its latest security product, which runs on NT or Unix and is aimed at bringing the reliability of voice networks to data systems. The Managed Firewall separates hardware security from the network management role which is performed by the Security Management software. This scaleable approach enables security to be managed throughout the network, says Lucent, a distinctive advantage over systems which provide security at the firewall point only. The firewall runs Bell Labs' Inferno operating system which more than 60 ISVs, OEMs and customers support, claims Lucent. Hewlett-Packard and Lucent plan to integrate Managed Firewall technology with Openview network management software. Lucent is also to supply switching and wireless access equipment to Telecom Egypt as part of the telco's Golden Pyramid project to double telephone ownership in the country over the next five years. Lucent has declined to comment on reports that it is to acquire remote access vendor Ascend Communications, a rumour which pushed Ascend's shares up by 14%. Lucent announced it is to acquire Livingstone, also a remote access specialist, for $650 in October.
