Compaq?s Altavista subsidiary has added a multimedia search facility to its Web portal site to enable users to search for images, sound clips and video.
The unit claims it has created the first searchable online index to contain more than 10 million images, which users can search by typing in key words. The AV Photo & Media Finder was developed using technology from Compaq?s Cambridge Research Laboratory.
Each search results in a set of small "thumbnail" images with brief descriptions and information on its size and resolution. Users can also locate images that are "visually similar" to their original one, although results are mixed.
The audio search facility will, among other things, help users retrieve songs that are recorded in the popular MP3 format.
