T-Mobile is investing an eight-figure sum in SAP software as it finally brings its UK acquisition of One 2 One into a single company infrastructure.
The project to integrate the UK business, which it acquired in 1999, into the T-Mobile business process infrastructure has been in planning and implementation for 18 months, with SAP and IBM Global Services involved in management and implementation.
T-Mobile said the SAP software, which will replace about 20 "outdated systems", will save millions of pounds each year.
The new system includes mySAP financial, human resource, supply chain management and business intelligence applications.
The implementation phase of the project is complete and the company said it is moving into the "exploitation phase", where it will increase its return on investment (ROI) with ongoing additions to the software.
T-Mobile claims that it has already cut costs through its streamlining of billing and supply chain processes, which has lowered the cost of processing financial transactions and reduced handset stock and delivery times.
SAP was a logical choice, according to Greg Russell, director of financial accounting at T-Mobile's UK business. "T-Mobile already uses SAP and we wanted to integrate the UK business to create a single company infrastructure," he said.
"We have implemented 12 modules of SAP across the value chain to connect customers through to suppliers in an extensive infrastructure."
As well as the ability to integrate the One 2 One business into its international business, T-Mobile required software that could change with the fast-moving mobile industry.
Russell said the UK business software infrastructure was becoming expensive to run and update and was not integrated. "We were forever working on integration," he added.
Hugh Jarvis, UK account manger for T-Mobile at SAP, said that the telco plans to extend its infrastructure further.
"There are a number of other applications T-Mobile is looking to add into the system, such as business warehousing, employee self-service and advance planning and optimisation," he added.
