Air Travellers whose flights may be delayed by glitches caused by the millennium bug will not be able to claim on their travel insurance for any disruptions in their journeys.
The no claim status has been issued to passengers by the Association of British Insurers in a guide sheet titled The Millennium - Travelling Safely Into The 21st Century.
"Travel insurance cover is available and most of it will remain the same as for any other trip," advises the ABI. "The only difference will be if you suffer a loss which occurs as a result of a data related failure."
The ABI warns that if consumers flights are postponed due to a technical difficulty related to the millennium bug they will not be able to claim insurance. Neither will they be able to claim if they cancel flights because they are worried about the effect the Millennium bug will have. Medical expenses, however, will be covered whether or not the claim is a result of a data related failure.
The ABI said that precise wordings will vary from company to company.
"If you have an annual travel policy and plan to be away over the millennium, check it to see how your cover might be affected," it advises.
"There has been widespread media coverage of the 'millennium bug' and how it might affect travel arrangements over the Christmas and New Year period. Noone knows precisely what - if anything - might happen," said Tony Baker, ABI's deputy director general. "This information sheet gives advice on the precautions you can take to minimise the risk of problems over the holiday period".
The ABI said that people should leave plenty of time to get to airports, stations and ferry terminals and should take all the usual precautions in making sure homes are secure when they are away.
"Thieves won't be taking a holiday over the millennium," it warns.
