Sybase is to overhaul its entire product line over the next two years in pursuit of a new Java-dependent database architecture that it hopes will restore its tarnished technological reputation.
The Impact Now: Adaptive Component Architecture is a framework for extending the firm?s SQL Server database to support new data types and Java applications. The architecture links different data types - such as relational and object oriented - using middleware known as the Component Integration Layer.
The new architecture - revealed on day one of the Sybase International User Group in Orlando, Florida - will be crucial to the future of the company, which lost its number two slot in the market and collapsed into losses when its original next generation technology strategy fell apart as a result of a series of abortive development projects.
?We had effectively dug a hole in the ground. A year ago it was reasonable to question our long term viability,? admitted chief executive Mitchell Kertzman. ?Today is the rebirth of Sybase. By the end of the month, it will be clear that Sybase will return to the No. 2 position in the database market.? The company reports its first quarter results next week.
Kertzman, who was appointed as chief executive nine months ago, said it had taken that long to sort out the company?s finances, organisation and product strategy. ?When a company is broken, it?s never broken in just one place,? he said. ?We did not want to make too many announcements until everything was in place. If it wasn?t there, anything we said would just have been marketing masturbation.?
The first manifestation of the new architecture will be in Adaptive Server 11.5, a renamed release of the existing SQL Server database now in beta with a planned shipping date in six months. Adaptive Server Anywhere for mobile, embedded, and departmental computing will follow later this year, while an OLTP version called Adaptive Server Enterprise will ship in the second half of next year.
Sybase?s strategy is heavily dependent on Java, but will also support Microsoft?s Active X and DCOM distributed object standard as well as the Object Management Group?s Common Object Request Broker Architecture.
