Internet security company Verisign will let enterprises manage their own digital certificates, via a new service called Verisign Onsite for Secure Server IDs.
Digital certificates are used to authenticate a user when sending or receiving mail, or when accessing Web sites. Verisign is one of the largest issuers of such digital certificates.
In combination with the SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) protocol, the Verisign certificates allow a secure Internet connection to be set up, enabling electronic commerce and other applications.
Verisign Onsite for Secure Server IDs allows enterprises to issue digital certificates to their employees or customers, without having to set up their own certificate server. Instead, they use Verisign's public key infrastructure.
The certificates are managed via a Web interface, which allows enterprises to hand out certificates and generate reports. The corporate administrator identifies himself to the Verisign system with a smartcard.
?This is really a solution for sites that have a large number of servers they wish to manage," said Ben Golub, product line manager at Verisign.
Customers will be able to buy 'bundles' of 10, 25 or more digital certificates, which they can then assign at will. A bundle of 10 starts at $2.850.
Verisign Onsite will work with a number of Web servers including Microsoft IIS 3.0 and later, and Netscape Enterprise 3.0 and later.
