Managerial roles across the IT sector have seen salary increases of almost seven per cent in the last year despite the downturn, as recruiting and retaining key staff remain major challenges to IT industry employers.
The latest salary and benefits survey from industry body the Computer Software and Services Association (CSSA) found that, even though 35 per cent of respondents laid off staff in the past 12 months, salary increases have consistently exceeded national averages.
Average salaries for technical roles have increased by 5.5 per cent in the past 12 months, compared with an increase of 6.44 per cent in the previous year.
Solutions architects now earn an average £52,192, with project leaders and IT consultants earning an average £45,500. Even systems developers with less than three years' experience can expect annual base salaries of £29,789.
The survey also found that a university degree adds an average £7,000 to the starting salary of an IT trainee, with graduate IT trainees earning £21,859.
CSSA marketing director Charles Ward maintained that the results demonstrated that it is business as usual for many companies.
"Even though the job market is tight and there are more available people across the skills profile, it hasn't affected salaries," he said.
