The racing arm of global car manufacturer Toyota has signed a multi-year technology and branding agreement with software vendor BMC.
The deal will allow Toyota Motorsport to streamline procedures for designing, building and monitoring performance of its Formula 1 (F1) competition cars.
Toyota Motorsport is one of only two F1 teams to handle every aspect of the design and manufacture of its cars in-house.
The company has invested in management and monitoring software and tools from BMC to achieve a higher quality of service from the IT systems it uses to design, test, monitor and analyse the performance of its cars.
Waldemar Klemm, Toyota Motorsport IT systems manager, said the team would first list and view its processes, name the most critical ones and identify the relation between them.
It will then identify the sets of IT services supporting those processes, and will map the chain of services in the BMC Business Service Management tool, collect and analyse the data, and generate reports.
The software underpinning this procedure will be used to optimise Toyota Motorsport's IT resources and improve strategic planning and cost-reducing activities, as well as improving the speed and quality of its IT services.
The agreement, signed at the beginning of July, will see the company use its new software through the remainder of the 2004 Grand Prix season, while the BMC will enjoy the publicity of branding Toyota Motorsport's cars.
Klemm said results were already being seen. "The first test in the SAP area helped us avoid the investment for two servers by simply moving one specific service to another server.
"That's the advantage of [a] process-driven point of view and the appropriate tools," he said.
