Ethernet networking company SMC is expected to make a major announcement next Tuesday which could involve either an acquisition or a merger.
The target of its attention is thought to be privately owned Acton, which specialises in Token Ring networking.
A company spokesperson refused to either confirm or deny that it would buy Accton.
But a source close to the company said that it could be the other way round.
He said: ?SMC is likely to provide the chipsets while Accton will provide cheap manufacturing. The seniors at Accton already own 20 per cent of SMC.?
The announcement will come as Wall Street closes on Tuesday, the same source said.
Neither Accton nor SMC were prepared to comment publicly on the measure.
