Business intelligence (BI) vendor Cognos wants to push BI throughout its customers' organisations with the aim of a scorecard on every user's desktop.
Companies should use reporting tools throughout the organisation to make sure top-level strategy is being followed, said Ron Zambonini, the vendor's chief executive.
"Our vision is to put a scorecard on everybody's desk," he said.
"The chief executive decides the strategy, but there is a sometimes a shocking disconnect between what he's trying to do and what the company actually does."
Last month Cognos launched ReportNet 1.1, which has an XML-based architecture and sits on a central server. This allows browser-based scorecards on every desktop to be updated according to centrally managed key performance indicators.
The product includes enhanced integration with Microsoft Office and is also designed to integrate with IBM's DB2 products and SAP's NetWeaver platform.
"Centralised planning solutions don't work," said Zambonini. "[This is] the exact opposite of reporting, in that it uses the CPU power of each PC. Planning should be distributed to those who know their part of the business best."
Ian Charlesworth, Butler Group senior research analyst, said Cognos had the right approach to reporting. "ReportNet is absolutely the correct strategy for Cognos in the reporting space.
"All credible BI vendors agree there is a need to move to zero-footprint, web-based reporting, and Cognos is leading the way with its tool," he said.
But the planning side is less clear-cut, with different approaches suiting companies in different markets.
"In manufacturing, without distributed planning there would be no business; planning is a multi-billion pound concern for them," said Charlesworth.
"[But] planning in an insurance company is a lot more strategic. Enterprises need to ensure they actually get the functional planning tools and integration appropriate to their organisation."
