The Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) has released version 2 of its Systems Management Architecture for Server Hardware (Smash) standard.
Smash provides a standard way to communicate with servers, allowing management software to control Smash-compliant systems from multiple vendors.
Without the standard, server vendors and management software developers would have to create custom connectors for different processors, chipsets and operating systems.
The new Smash version adds support for programmatic interfaces, as well as web services and security protocols such as Web Services for Management and the Common Interformation Model.
