The top 500 fastest growing technology firms in Europe are predominantly software houses, according to business consultant Deloitte.
The company's annual review of the best performing firms found that nearly half of are software companies, followed by communications and internet firms in second and third places respectively.
But UK companies fared badly, with only biotech firm ProStrakan Group making the top 20.
"This is the fifth year of the ranking in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and we are beginning to see some interesting regional and global trends," said Eric Morgain, Deloitte's partner in charge of the Technology Fast 500 EMEA.
"Western Europe still dominates the ranking, with 61 per cent of companies featured in the Fast 500 from this region, a drop of 11 per cent compared with 2003.
