Nortel said it has discovered a way of boosting dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) technology that will shave the cost of running existing DWDM networks by between 40 per cent and 50 per cent.
The technology, called Optera 1600G, enables 160 colours or wave lengths to be carried along the light in each fibre, running at 10Gbps. Existing DWDM technology carries a limit of 32 wave lengths per fibre.
Greg Mumford, general manager of Nortel's optical networks business, said telcos can expect costs savings. "The network cost will be lower. For the same fibre and the same number of electronics as today's DWDM, the cost can be between 40 per cent and 50 per cent lower for the same capacity using Optera," he said.
Nortel said this can be achieved because it has found a way of splitting the light in each fibre to carry more traffic, and to use a region in the fibre that is not currently used by today's DWDM offerings. Also it has been able to put the wave lengths closer together.
Mumford said Optera will be available in modular form, beginning with 40 wave lengths for 400Gbps capacity.
The technology will be tested in north America with an unnamed telco and Mumford said it wants to also work with a European carrier. Optera is expected to be generally available in the second half of next year.
