Vodafone won the battle for the highest number of new mobile phone subscribers over Christmas, attracting 459,000 fresh customers between October and December.
Orange, the youngest of the four UK mobile operators - which recently claimed to have overtaken Vodafone as the biggest moneyspinner - attracted the fewest new subscribers, with 130,000 sign-ups.
Cellnet narrowly beat Orange, which signed 149,000 new subscribers. One 2 One said the period was the best quarter since it launched it service in 1993. It registered 206,000 new customers during the quarter, increasing its market share to 12 per cent.
