Britain's first-time voters know more computer-games characters than they do leading politicians, a survey of 18-22-year-olds has revealed.
The survey, commissioned by electrical retailer Dixons, asked a thousand young adults to list all the computer-game characters, members of the cabinet and members of the shadow cabinet they could think of.
While those questioned managed an average of eight computer-game stars, they could typically name only four members of the cabinet and only two members of the shadow cabinet.
Of the politicians, only Tony Blair (100 per cent) and William Hague (98 per cent) were listed by more of the respondents than Tomb Raider heroine Lara Croft (97 per cent).
Indeed, Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario, Donkey Kong, Pikachu and Crash Bandicoot all scored better than the 44 per cent managed by the next most recognised cabinet politician, Punchin' John Prescott, the deputy prime minister.
Chancellor Gordon Brown (42 per cent) edged out Zelda (41 per cent) for tenth place on the list. But, even despite this year's foot and mouth outbreak, agriculture minister Nick Brown managed only 37 per cent, less than the 39 per cent score of Chun Li, from the Street Fighter series of beat-'em-ups.
Conservative Ann Widdecombe (33 per cent) beat Labour's Mo Mowlem (31 per cent) but trailed Duke Nukem (36 per cent), while Michael Portillo (Conservative, 27 per cent), Jack Straw, David Blunkett, Robin Cook and Chris Smith all trailed behind Tails (29 per cent), Sonic the Hedgehog's sidekick.
