Multi-channel digital TV is an increasingly dominant force in UK broadcasting, according to a major new survey from Ofcom.
More than seven out of 10 UK households watched digital channels on their main TV last year, up 7.9 per cent on 2005.
Freeview continues to be the main driver of digital TV uptake, but subscription TV is also on the march. TV advertising revenue fell by eight per cent last year, while subscription revenues rose to widen the gap to more than £1bn.
Ofcom's first annual public service broadcasting report, published last week, tracked viewing habits since 2002 and polled the opinions of 7,500 viewers.
Public service broadcasters' own digital channels are growing in popularity and reputation among viewers, partly because they are seen as being more innovative.
Fewer than a third of respondents thought that the main terrestrial channels were sufficiently innovative, with ITV1 and Five coming in for the most criticism.
News and children's TV have seen the biggest migration from terrestrial to digital. News viewing has "dipped sharply" over the past year, with the 16-24 age group especially favouring other news sources such as the internet.
The main channels have responded by slashing their children's TV output; ITV1 recently announced a cut in children's programming to around five hours a week.
Teletext is also in decline; adult Teletext viewers were down from 15 million a week in 2005 to 13.7 million last year.
