BMC Software is buying the assets of Magic Solutions from Network Associates for approximately $47m (£27m) in cash.
The enterprise management firm said Magic's help desk software and related intellectual property, including its Service Desk and Help DeskIQ products, will become part of its Remedy business unit.
The buy-out, which is expected to be approved within 60 days, will add almost 200 Magic Solutions employees to BMC Software.
"As the economy offers positive signals for growth, vendors of consolidated IT service management technologies will look for acquisition opportunities to expand their presence in the marketplace," commented Kris Brittain, research director at analyst Gartner.
"Enterprises should anticipate more consolidations as vendors improve their market penetration from small- to enterprise-level, and build on their industry expertise."
