Reseller WCI has won a three-year contract as a preferred IT supplier to the NHS, which could be worth up to £3m in networking sales.
WCI was awarded the contract, part of the NHS's Framework Agreement strategy, by the NHS Purchasing and Supply Agency and is now an approved supplier of local and wide area network technologies as well as leasing, maintenance and managed services.
Although there is no guarantee of sales, it gives WCI the status of preferred supplier of voice and data convergence products.
The company already gets 50 per cent of its business from the healthcare industry with the remainder coming from the corporate sector.
Resellers are increasingly building solid businesses around vertical markets as corporate sector demand continues to be weak.
"This is not a guarantee of business but it means we are an approved supplier to the NHS and there is more chance of winning business," said Dave Marriner, director of healthcare at WCI.
"I am looking to see 30 to 40 per cent year-on-year growth [in this sector] over the period."
The deal strengthens WCI's relationship with the NHS, which has seen it provide more than 400 NHS organisations across the UK including a 24-hour platform for NHS Direct.
Another reseller, System Software Solutions, has had success in dealing with the NHS since being named a preferred supplier for security products.
"If we are official the NHS can come straight to us," explained Julia McCarron, marketing manager at the company.
System Software already sells into NHS, local government and police services throughout the UK.
Jon Busfield, technical and professional services director at the company, said in a statement: "By becoming part of the NHS Framework Agreement, doors have already opened to new customers and we have a significant competitive edge through our inclusion."
