Fujitsu Siemens will next month launch a new consumer desktop PC aimed at first time computer users.
The device, called Celvin, was unveiled yesterday at the company's Products and Trends show in Paderborn, Germany. Fujitsu Siemens claims that consumers with little or no PC knowledge will be able to connect the device to the Internet "straight out of the box".
Tony Liu, Fujitsu Siemens' PC business group senior vice president, said: "With features such as fast start-up, USB expansion and colour-coded cables, Celvin is particularly easy to use, offering an impressive PC performance without the user having to understand how the system works."
Celvin conforms with the Easy PC initiative - a scheme developed by Microsoft, Intel and others to make PCs easier to use. The computer is based on chip maker AMD's Easynow platform.
Celvin is pre-configured and has external expansion using USB technology. This means that users will not have to open the case to expand the system.
Two models will be available: one is based on AMD's entry-level K6 11 450MHz processor and the other is a 500/533MHz system based on the forthcoming AMD K6-2 + processor. Celvin has a Fast IDE Ultra DMA/33 hard disk controller with capacities up to 8.4Gb, a vertical CD-ROM drive, an integral 2D/3D accelerator in the graphics processor, and pre-installed Windows 98.
An MP3 player is pre-installed on the computer, and buyers also get a MP3 music CD with about 150 tracks.
The first model will be launched to the public at the CeBIT trade show in Hanover next month, and will begin shipping in March. It is believed that Celvin will be in Tesco supermarkets, although Fujitsu Siemens could not confirm this. Celvin is expected to cost about 800 euros (£493).
