IBM's RS/6000 division will lose 400 of its 3,000 staff worldwide, company officials have confirmed. It will amalgamate manufacturing of its AS/400 and RS boxes, although the 'Stealth' SP machine (see yesterday's story) will continue to be made separately.
Julie Woods, marketing manager of the RS group in Europe, said: "In Italy, AS/400s and RS/6000 machines are made in the same factory. In the US, they've decided to follow the same route."
But Woods said there was no truth in stories that production of RS machines was faltering. "We're looking to increase volumes this year and taking 1.5 per cent of market share from our competitors," she said. "That means an increase not a decrease in volumes."
