Based on the proviso that MCI sells its Internet business, the EU has formally approved the company's takeover by Worldcom. The buyer of the Internet business must be approved by European and US regulators to ensure effective competition to the newly merged Worldcom-MCI. US approval is expected to be granted by the end of August. Competitor GTE said it would continue with its lawsuit opposing the merger.
