3Com has introduced a 56Kbps modem with a Universal Serial Bus (USB) connector. The US Robotics 56K Voice Faxmodem is the industry's first USB-capable modem. The modem incorporates 3Com's x2 technology for 56Kbps connectivity. Due this month, it will cost about $249 (#156). Hewlett-Packard, its VeriFone subsidiary and Electronic Data Systems (EDS) are trying to make it easier for financial institutions to support multiple types of electronic payments. The companies announced their First Global Commerce initiative, a forum for the development of applications that support everything from Secure Electronic Transaction (SET) for on-line use of credit cards to Open Financial Connectivity for home banking. VeriFone's Integrated Payment System will be the core of future development.
