Hewlett-Packard (HP) is investing $17 million in New Media Venture Partners (NMVP) to help it fund, incubate and develop proprietary technology, digital content and ecommerce start-ups.
To further boost its eservices initiative for penetrating the electronic business market, the supplier also outlined plans for a new eservicecenter bundle to provide customers with a Web enabled server and network and storage systems so they can deploy Internet applications and services more easily.
Eservicecenter is being billed as a tool for optimising workloads and reducing system complexity and is aimed at enterprises, dot coms and service providers.
It comprises the HPUX Workload Manager (WLM), which automatically distributes system resources according to business priorities, and HP PRM Analyze, which collects system accounting data and generates reports so that chargebacks can be calculated accurately.
The HP 9000 Hyperplex technology also boosts system availability using an Hyperfabric server clustering interconnect called Hyperfabric 2000.
Cisco Systems has also teamed with HP to jointly develop technology in areas such as load balancing, high availability, quality of service and security.
As part of its deal with NMVP, however, HP will make a $2 million equity investment in the Internet based media holding company and will provide it with up to $15 million in debt financing.
NMVP's subsidiaries handle such activities as producing digital content and distributing it in the business-to-business marketplace.
Craig White, senior vice president and general manager of HP's Technology Finance unit, said that the relationship was one of several the company was establishing with venture holding companies.
It has already started working with several NVMP subsidiaries, including Moon Crescent Studios and Virtually Everything, and will provide products and services to help them expand their technology infrastructures.
White added that HP was in the process of building a $1 billion portfolio of initiatives that include revenue sharing and venture debt financing for companies that are moving their businesses to the Web or starting up in the Internet space.
