North Western Trains has become the first privatised train company in the UK to publish real-time information about its services on the Net.
North Western Trains' home page provides information about timetables, routes, fares, engineering work, promotions and destinations. It includes a stations departure board with the time, destination and status of any North Western Train service. Steve Silk, network service manager for site developer BR Business Systems (BRBS), said: "This real-time information facility is available for all 303 stations managed by North Western Trains. It's the first phase of a larger project to create a Web site that lets passengers buy tickets direct from the Net."
Over the next few months, according to Silk, BRBS will add query facilities to let passengers check on arrival times and graphic maps displaying a train's location. In January, Railtrack launched the UK's first timetable facility (www.rail.co.uk). To date, over five million passengers have been handled by this service - nearly 6,000 an hour and over a million enquiries a month. (nwt.rail.co.uk)
