Compaq tipped to acquire more companies (120)
by Mike Magee in Houston, Texas
Rumours that Compaq was in talks with direct vendor Gateway 2000 were circulating today as CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer fuelled the speculation in a keynote speech.
Delegates at Compaq's Innovate conference claimed that the company was in talks with Gateway but a company representative would only comment: "Compaq will not comment on rumours."
Eckhard Pfeiffer said in his keynote speech: "We're identifying new partnerships and the potential for new acquisitions as we ride the growth wave."
One delegate from a large US reseller said that if Compaq acquired Gateway it would give it more ability to tackle arch rival Dell and also remove the need to entirely restructure its relationships with its channel.
