Symantec has produced a software version of its gateway security appliance, as part of a strategy to make security more manageable in enterprises.
Symantec's gateway Security Appliance was launched in May, with antivirus, firewall, content filtering and VPN functions integrated onto a hardware platform intended to act as a gateway between enterprise servers and the internet.
Now the same functions will be available in an integrated form of client software, said Aled Miles, northern Europe managing director for Symantec.
"The problem with the security market has always been that people can only buy point products. There's no cohesive integration of these products," said Miles.
"Increasingly, we're seeing blended threats, which hit people on a number of levels. Meanwhile, integration is expensive and hard to manage."
Corporate desktops can be inoculated against these multiple threats with a single hit of software which is cheap to administer and can be easily managed, Miles added.
This single shot will allow resellers to reach a broad base of clients in the shortest possible time, he said.
Symantec's chief operating officer John Schwarz criticised rival vendor Network Associates International (NAI), whose e-policy Orchestrator would fail end-users looking for complete coverage, he said.
"All they're offering is antivirus software really. What we need is a blended solution for a blended threat."
According to research carried out by Symantec, the enterprise sector of the IT security market now comprises 65 per cent of all sales, an increase of 25 per cent in five years.
As security evolves to the point where customers demand complete integrated suites of security products, Schwarz said, management of these devices would be the next crucial arena.
Symantec says its Gateway and Client appliances will be adapted to work with HP's Openview and IBM's Tivoli management packages immediately. CA's Unicenter will be its next priority.
