US optical equipment maker, Tellabs is to acquire IP and ATM switch router specialist, Netcore, for $575 million.
Netcore's integrated IP and ATM switch is used to combine data, voice and video across a single network. Its product called Everest will be sold with Tellab's line of optical networking, managed access and transport systems.
Tellabs hit the headlines last year when its ambitious $7 billion merger with fellow optical tools vendor, Ciena, fell through (see VNU Newswire, 14 September, 1998). The combined force would have presented a serious threat to the optical ambitions of giants Nortel and Lucent.
