JAWOC, the official website for Japan's organising committee for the 2002 World Cup finals, was forced to close this week after defacers broke into it and left an obscene message.
The site, which gets more than 100,000 hits per day, was temporarily taken down after a message appeared over the weekend on the homepage saying: "F*** Japan hack by Chinese GX boy".
Yesterday the site was still down while the technical team secured the server and repaired the damage. A spokesman said it would not be accessible again until they had developed a more "enhanced security system".
The World Cup will be held next year in Japan and South Korea.
