Ericsson has confirmed it is considering opportunities in the teenage mobile phone market.
The Swedish technology giant told ?Newswire? it is looking at several different segments of the mobile phone market, but denied it is developing product for young children.
?We are definitely not considering marketing phones to small children,? said Jan Ahrenbring, vice president of communications and marketing at Ericsson. ?But if you look at teenagers, specifically 15 years and above, it is a good opportunity as they are using mobile phones more and more to keep in contact with parents and friends.?
Ahrenbring stressed that if at any point it produced a product for the teenage market it would be marketed responsibly, and not as a gadget-style toy.
Ericsson refused to comment on a possible release date for teenage-specific product. ?We are looking at it, but don?t want to release further details right now,? said Ahrenbring.
According to analysts the 14 to 18 year old age group promises to be a very lucrative market for mobile phones, particularly as features such as email access catch on. A handful of mobile phone companies are expected to enter this market, although it is doubtful it will be before Christmas.
