Microsoft was tightlipped about reports that it is racing to recruit Java developers, and even to do a deal with Javasoft, but has ambitious goals to dominate the Java market.
The company said today it has no knowledge of proposed deals with the Sun unit, but confirmed it aims to take a big hold on the Java market over the next few months.
Three weeks ago, Simon Witts, enterprise director at Microsoft UK, claimed the company already held 80 per cent of the serious Java market, while Mike Pryke-Smith, Internet tools product manager at Microsoft, today said it now had the tools and market share to make a difference.
He said: ?What we have today is a licence from Sun from a year ago and since then we?ve been working to implement Java into our OS and into Internet Explorer and also giving developers tools to create Java applications.? He said MS had integrated Java with ActiveX. ?Our developers say they?re excited about the language but they want tools like C++ amd VB as well,? he said.
Visual J++, originally codenamed Jakarta, was one of the weapons in the Microsoft armoury. ?We will aggressively market VJ++, it?s the best tool for creating Java applications, despite the misapprehension in the trade press that it can?t be used to create pure Java code,? insisted Pryke-Smith.
He added:?I hadn?t heard about Microsoft being interested in buying Java developers?. That followed press rumours that both it and Sun were trying to poach staff from San Jose company Cooper & Peters. Microsoft is still, however, in discussions with San Francisco company Dimension X, which focuses on multimedia applications.
Pryke-Smith also claimed he had no knowledge of a deal between Microsoft and Sun to release bundled application software on Sun Sparc workstations in June.
