The European Commission (EC) approved Lucent Technologies' pending $20 billion takeover of rival networking firm, Ascend Communications, on Friday.
The EC said the merged entity, to be dubbed Lucent-Ascend, "is essentially of a complementary nature and gives rise to few overlaps".
Last month, however, the two companies received a request for additional information from the US Justice Department's antitrust division in connection with the deal. But the two still expect it to close by 30 June.
